Racing at Salcomb this week end ?

Dear Member

I’d like to invite you to the Lyme Regis Gig Club Extraordinary General Meeting, which is taking place on Tuesday 28^th June 2011 at 7.30 at The Powerboat Club, Monmouth Beach Car Park, opposite The Boat Building Academy.

The purpose of the Extraordinary General Meeting is threefold, and includes:

Ø Amending Lyme Regis Gig Club’s Constitution to enable us to put the Mens and Ladies Rowing Captains on the same basis within the General Committee and to enable the appointment of a team selection subcommittee which will be responsible for the selection of members of all club teams competing in official competitions. Please take a look at the Club’s Constitution, which is available on the homepage at www.lymeregisgigclub.com.

Ø Elect the new Ladies Rowing Captain.

Ø Vote on and select the name for the Club’s planned new wooden Cornish Pilot Gig, which we plan to commission in October for a launch over the summer next year.

The EGM will also give time for us to have a general discussion on the Club, plans and options for the future and a couple of brief presentations on the new method of ordering kit and the way in which we can use the internet to coordinate activity, share information and pictures.

The Club is looking to appoint a new Ladies Captain and please let me know if you are interested in standing for this vitally important Committee role.

The bar at The Powerboat Club will be open and this is a great opportunity to catch up and make sure we continue to have fun get the best out of Lyme Regis Gig Club and what the future has to hold.

Lyme Regis Gig Club – Report on Isles of Scilly Gig Championships

Lyme Regis Gig Club travelled out to The Isles of Scilly to compete in the 22^nd Pilot Gig Championships over the May Bank Holiday to race against 130 boats representing south west seafaring towns and villages. The event brings together teams from the semi professional to the amateur, from the young, muscular and fit to the rather older and less streamlined to battle through the often rough waters off England’s rocky western coast for the most highly prized gig trophies.

The evening of Friday 29^th April saw the first Veterans’ Races, for those over forty, staged over the 1.59 nautical miles of squally sea from St Agnes to St Mary’s Quay. First away were the fifty two gigs comprising Ladies crews and Lyme Regis Gig Club had two teams in the starting line up and after a hard fought race that saw the A team in Black Ven 45th and the B Crew a close 47^th. Competing next were the Men’s Veterans who raced with 64 boats over the same course, with Lyme represented by three crews. The Lyme Regis Veterans Men’s A Team achieved an impressive 15^th with the B Team 24^th and the C team bringing up the rear in 65^th place.

The main events at the Championships were the four gruelling races held over the Saturday and Sunday in steadily deteriorating weather, under a grey sky and in choppy seas. Both Ladies and later the Men followed each other to row out to the starter’s line for their first races, both of which saw 124 gigs competing over the St Agnes to St Mary’s course in a rolling swell and high winds. On crossing the finishing line of the first race the competitors were then sub divided by their placing into divisions of around twelve evenly matched gigs. Each division then competed in three following shorter races held over the 1.16 nautical miles from Nut Rock to St Mary Quay. The winning two gigs in each of the first two short events went up to the next level and the last two dropped down and the Championship prizes were awarded following the final races.

The Ladies were first to row out to the start line with Lyme Gig Club’s A Team racing Black Ven and the B Team in Rebel. The Championship competition was fierce not least between the competitive Lyme teams who after the flag dropped fought it out between themselves and the rest. After the long race the two Lyme Ladies teams were both in Division F where they continued to battle it out, with the B Team being ahead in one race, but the duel being finished off in fine style by the A’s who won the final race, which saw them on the podium taking the Divisional prize. The Ladies event saw 124 gigs competing with Lyme A Team coming in 61^st and the B Crew 67^th, forty five places up from their 2010 placing.

The Men’s event was also closely contested with Lyme’s A Team in Black Ven being ceded in Division D and finishing a fine 42^nd up twenty three places from the previous year and the Town’s B Team finishing 91^st .

The winners of this year’s Pilot Gig Championships were the brilliant teams from Falmouth who carried off both the Ladies and Men’s winners trophies.

Each year the Isles of Scilly stage a remarkable Championship that sees hundreds of people pitching their skill, courage and determination at sea with long oars and in beautiful traditional pilot gigs to be part of a team, to do their best and see how good they can be. It’s a fantastic, exhilarating, punishing series of races that leaves you laughing, aching and feeling alive. Lyme Regis Gig Club is planning to do even better next year. In 2009 Gail Mc Garva was awarded a scholarship from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust,funded by the Royal Warrant Holders Association,to build a Lerret, a boat wholly native to Lyme Bay,originating from 1682. A beautifully beamy double-ended clinker vessel of 17ft, elm on oak.The Trust are dedicated to the preservation of British crafts and craftsmanship.Gail has built this boat 'by eye', without the use of designer drawings,under the mentorship of Roy Gollop,one of the last remaining boatbuilders in Dorset with this particular skill.

There was only one seaworthy Lerret remaining called Vera,built in 1923 from Langton Herring,which Gail is now custodian of.The lines were taken from this boat ,to build a 'daughtership' to Vera. This new build preserves the lineage of the Lerrets, breathing new life into a new generation of this unique craft. The inherent characteristics of this vessel have remained virtually unchanged from its inception,designed to be launched and landed from the steep stoney shelved beaches of Lyme Bay.

The Lerrets though primarily used for mackerel fishing,had earned such respect for their seaworthiness,that by the early 19th century the newly formed RNLI ,adopted two Lerrets for service as life-boats. Archive material recounting their stories of saving lives at sea is extensive and quite remarkable.

The new Lerret is not a static museum exhibit but is an expression of living history.The Lerret is to be actively used as a training boat to enable young people to gain confidence at sea,develop their rowing skills and work together as team.

All boats have a story to tell and the story of the Lerret is wholly pertinent to our Dorset shores and our communities.

Gail as a traditional wooden boatbuilder is totally committed to the building of craft of historical resonance that hold vibrancy in their modern day communities.

On the 31st July the Lerret daughtership was launched from Lyme harbour alongside the mother boat Vera as a vibrant celebration of living history.The launch was part of Lyme's Lifeboat fortnight to celebrate the Lerret's history as a RNLI lifeboat.

The new Lerret and procession,complete with an oar salute from Lyme Regis Gig club, journeyed from the Boat Building Academy,who kindly housed the building of the boat,to the harbour slipway. All boat bearers and rowers were dressed in their ‘Sunday best”,white shirts and waistcoats,echoing boatyard launches of the past.A brass band heralded the arrival of the new Lerret.

Gail Mc Garva gave a speech of thanks and presented Roy Gollop as mentor with a bowler hat as a gift of appreciation for all his guidance and support.Again this echoes boat building yards of the past,where the foreman of the yard would have worn a bowler hat.

The new the Lerret was named by the president of The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust,William Gunn.She is called ‘Littlesea’,the local name for The Fleet behind Chesil Beach.Gail first heard the name from Majorie Ireland,who is 90 years old and whose family worked the Lerrets along these shores.The name ‘Littlesea’is a tribute and celebration of Majorie’s family and all the Lerret fisherfolk.The president of QEST presented Majorie Ireland with a bottle of champagne.A blessing was carried out by the Vicar Keith Vivien and a specially written song for the Lerret was sung by Sue Beckers. The boat was then carried through an archway of Cornish Pilot Gig oars, scattered with sea salt for safe passage at sea and then launched into Lyme's historic harbour,cradled by the arm of the Cobb.Littlesea was guided out to sea by the RNLI lifeboat ‘The Pearl of Dorset’,accompained by Vera the motherboat and escorted by Lyme's two Cornish Pilot Gigs,which were also build by Gail in 2008 and 2009.

Hope this helps paints a picture of launch day and the story of the Lerret.

Lyme Regis Gig Club had a naming ceremony for our new safety boat Conway today. I like Peter Wiles pictures.

Lyme Regis Gig Club is lucky to be associated with the Conway Association whose members attended HMS Conway, a naughtical training school for member of the Merchant Navy and Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. This came about because the Gig Club’s late Committee Member Michael Rushforth attended Conway. The Conway Association support the Gig Club preserves the sea faring traditions that date back to the Napoleonic period when HMS Conway was launched.

The Gig Club safety boat was launched by Ian Hopkinson (hoppy) who attended Conway with the late Michel Rushforth. Ian is now a Marine Surveyor in Vancouver and visited Lyme Regis for the launching ceremony. Angela Rushforth and her son Tom were guests of honour.

The Gig Club’s safety boat Conway is a Rib of the type used by special forces with an inflatable hull and can be deployed from helicopters and submarines. Conway will be used as a safety boat supporting the Clubs new planned youth section and at rowing regattas and to take gig crews too and from the pontoon in the Pool, where the gigs are often based for training sessions.

The Gig on its charity row arrived in Lyme Regis on its way to Poole from Cornwall. Escorted by a yacht they were met by our two gigs and the safety boat. Its was the first experience of Josephine Whetlor in the safety boat with Henry and one other . The Chairman had asked me to greet the pirates when they came ashore and welcome them to Lyme Regis and it was a pleasure to do so. In the evening a chanty evening was held at the Harbour Inn and good evening it was . We all wished the pirates a safe voyage back to Poole. A truly fantastic weekend was spent with the Lyme Regis Mens A crew in the gig Rebel at the recent Scilly World Gig Championships. Back in the distance past when I volunteered to cox for them, if they needed a little 'Scilly experience', I had little idea about what the weekend had in store.

The first race on the Saturday is always an awesome experience and even after 18 Championships the whole spectacle never diminishes. After a warning to get back, we did, but wondered whether a disqualification deed would be done, but luckily not.

The crew didn't feel their happiest on the Saturday, but following the award of a trophy - a toilet seat, found on the beach, the whole atmosphere lifted and Sunday was to be special.

the championship works by racing all gigs off together in the first race and then they are seeded. in each race the top two go up and the bottom two go down. On the Sunday Rebel was on form, winning in the morning the crew rose to the next heat and then in the afternoon, in a close fought battle with Lyonnesse (currently on loan to St Agnes on the Isles of Scilly) they won - winning Group F.

Joy all round, one of the most infectious things about a win is that it is not only shared with the crew that complete the task (all 7 of them) but also the rest of the Club. Lyme were certainly going to party on that on the Sunday night, many suffering on the Monday morning.

A Club that has the boats at its heart truly realised why Scillies is such a great experience over the weekend and are no doubt beginning to count down to next year, well I know that one of them is.

On a personal note, the first Scillies for any club is special and to be able to spend time with a club at this stage is very precious and as secretary of the CPGA dealing with 55 clubs on a regular basis it was an honour to be part of this special time for Lyme and certainly one that I will not forget and I hope, well I know that they won't either. Next year boys, you know where I am, if you need me!

Just thought you'd all like to know how we got on at the weekend!

Out of a total field of 112 boats, the Ladies crews came 53rd for the A's, in the middle of Group E, and the Ladies B came 100th, towards the top of Group I.

For the men, competing against 121 other boats, the A crew achieved 61st place, winning Group F and thus getting to go up on the podium to collect our first trophy as winners of the group. The B crew came in 92, in the middle of Group H.

The Ladies Vets crews came in 34th and 43rd respectively in a field of 46, competing in horrible rainy conditions with a heavy sea. The rain stopped for the Mens Vets crews, who came in 24th and 46th, out of 62 boats.

Our lovely 'Rebel' and 'Black Ven' were voted the prettiest boats by the islanders, and we also won the prize for the best supporters!

All in all, a fantastic achievement for Lyme this weekend. There is an item on BBC Spotlight tonight on the Championships, so have a look at that if you can. You can also see Black Ven on the start line on ITV WestCountry News - the link is

I am planning to put together a disc of a selection of all the photos taken over the weekend, which will be available for £4.50 for those that would like it - it has become clear over the weekend that we need to acquire some new radios and this seems a good way to fundraise for it! Let me know if you'd like a copy and I'll stick you on the list.

All the clubs I spoke to were really impressed with the results we achieved in our first ever championships - to come in the top half on our first time out is a huge achievement, and testament not only to the hard training of the rowers and coxes but also the fantastic support we get from everyone. So a big pat on the back all round. Here's to a great season!

Hi all

Great response with requests to row! I have attached ‘the list’ of rowers and would appreciate an early reply if any of you cannot make the day after all.

We will aim to leave Lyme at 8.15am on Sunday 18^th so will need those first crews down at the gig shed by 8 a.m. at the latest. The crew in the boats leaving Lyme will include the Governor of the Portland Youth Offenders Unit and three of his colleagues in their sponsored fundraiser from Dartmoor prison to Portland Prison using as many modes of transport as possible.

The second crews will be leaving West Bay at around 10.30 a.m to return to Lyme Regis. The row should take under 2 hours each way.

We would like to support the Portland Prison Crew with their fundraising efforts for Help the Heroes which is a charity raising monies for military personnel wounded in current conflicts so I have attached a sponsorship form for all rowers – please could you try and get as much support as possible

Ralph was a leading boat builder who built many gigs and played a central role in the rebirth of the sport of gig rowing and racing. Ralph supported Gail McGarva and advised and offered help in building Lyme Regis first gig Rebel and attended her launch. Lyme Regis Gig Club is very sad to learn that Ralph died and offers condolences to his family and many friends in Cornwall.’

Obituary for Michael Rushforth

News of the death of Michael Rushforth has been greeted with sadness by his many friends who include the members of Lyme Gig Club. Michael worked resolutely to establish the Lyme Regis Club and forged close links with HMS Conway and its Association, whose seafaring traditions the Club works to uphold. To the last Michael lived life to the full and will be remembered for his energy,intelligence,experience and his lasting love of the sea.
Michael was born in 1938,educated at Bentham Grammar School and HMS Conway. After a spell in the Merchant Navy with the Blue Funnel Line he left the sea to help care for his parents who were suffering from poor health. Michael's career thereafter was in agriculture,specialising in animal nutrition sales and advice. On retirement he was living in St Mawes,Cornwall and moved to Lyme Regis in January ,2007.
Michael leaves his wife Angela, children Sue and Tom , and grandchildren Gemma and Jake who miss him greatly.
A family service for Michael will be held at the Parish church of St Michael the Archangel in Lyme Regis on October at 2.30 pm. followed by a gathering for family and friends at the Pilot Boat inn.

Sadness to report.

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Michael Rushforth, cox and gentleman of the sea died this morning having suffered a heart attack following an operation to repair a burst aorta.
We will be sending flowers to his wife Angela, and family,over the next couple days,with the condolences and sympathy of all at the Gig Club.
I will let you know as soon as l know of the date of the funeral.

PRESIDENT of the HMS Conway Club, which aims to maintain relationships with former cadets of the HMS Conway training ship, visited Lyme Regis last week and praised the town’s boating organisations.

The visit from Archie Smith was organised by Lyme Regis Gig Club member Michael Rushforth, who is a former cadet on the HMS Conway.

He said: “This visitor is special and could do a lot of good for the youth of the town in terms of either sea careers or maritime employment through his wide office of expertise.”

The Conway Club has already donated the gig club with a super cruiser to sell at Rob Perry Marine to fund their new safety boat, which will be called “The Conway”. They will also be awarding a historical cup from a collection that has been on display at HMS Devonport in Plymouth.

Mr Smith, who is also director and chief of the global Oil Spill Response Ltd, was shown around the Boat Building Academy and viewed the gig club’s first vessel “Rebel” with bosun Chris Douglas, followed by a viewing of their second boat, which is currently under construction, “Black Ven”, with boat-builder Gail McGarva.

The academy also provided lunch for the guest, who was given a “Rebel” polo shirt and cap.

Mr Rushforth said: “Archie left with a big smile on his face and was amazed at the skill and dedication here in Lyme Regis on all matters to do with the sea, and the community spirit portrayed at the Boat Building Academy.

“His interests spread far and wide in the marine industry and he has special feeling for our gig club.”

Mr Rushforth is also hoping to open a Conway Centre in the town, full of artefacts and memorabilia from the training ship.

Recently our Chairman and I attended a meeting at Bridport to support them in starting a Gig club. Tremendous enthusiasm at this meeting with over fifty people turning up .Marcus and Gail gave talks on there expertise one for administration and the other for Gog building. This weekend we have invited Bridport to Lyme for taster sessions to help them on there way .

Hi all.
Attached is this weekends rota. I've unfortunately had to postpone the taster session, again, due to the weather forecast. It is going to be very cold, with easterly winds, and so not the conditions for having your first row! Unlikely we'll get out at all on Sunday, so check the phone.

Just a gentle reminder that the deadline for letting me know if you can row is Thursday evening, and if you can all possibly stick to that it does make my life a little easier.

When you factor in tide, wind, current, and the speed the weather can change, you can see why I have to be cautious.

Hello all.
Just a quick mail to all members, but specifically to rowing members.
The ladies had a very productive meeting on Tuesday, which was attended by the secretary and ladies captain from Weymouth rowing club. They are very impressed with the progress we have made so far, and confirmed that we are on the right track regarding the rowing development of the club.
Both Jackie and myself are committed to offering rowing to all, which with just one gig, is not always easy. The winter league we have set up with Weymouth and Swanage will give many the opportunity to get some race experience, but because of limitations on the amount of races we can have, not everyone can row. Please bear with us. The opportunities to race will become more, especially when we have our second boat.
Our criteria for selecting sides is based mainly on experience at the moment, so keep up the training, and your chance will come.
Remember, if you have any problems/queries/thoughts, etc do not hesitate to contact either myself or Jackie.

Hi all

We are having a ladies get together on Tuesday 25th November 7pm at the Power Boat Club. It promises to be a fun, informal and informative evening for both Rowing and Social Lady members.

We have invited some of the Weymouth ladies to come and chat to us and answer any questions – I’m sure we’ve all got some!
Gail has also offered to open up the gig shed so we can see how our new Gig is progressing and learn a bit about the ‘build’.

The bar will be manned and we thought it might be nice to have some nibbles so perhaps everyone could bring a plate of something to share (finger food would be good so we can avoid plates and cutlery).

Trafalgar Night Celebration

Lyme Regis Gig Club celebrated the end of the summer rowing season at a Trafalgar Night celebration held on October 18th at The Powerboat Club. Members of the town’s new sea rowing club and their guests were invited to don a nautical rig and mark both the glorious victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and the sad loss of Admiral Lord Nelson. Whilst also charting progress of the Gig Club and mapping course over the next year. The Gig Club’s Trafalgar Night included a ‘below decks dinner’ , heroic speeches, much back slapping, shanty singing, a raffle and ribaldry.

The Chair of Lyme Regis Gig Club addressed the assembled crew by highlighting how far the Club had travelled since its launch in February 2007, both in commissioning its first gig Rebel, recruiting a membership of over one hundred and running a rowing programme that has seen the Rebel at sea during evenings and weekends over the last three months.

The Chair went on to say ‘Gigs are something new and something old and that sea rowing is part of Lyme’s history, which is one of the reasons why the Club has been so well received by townspeople and visitors. Lyme Regis Gig Club should honour Lyme’s nautical past and aim for to have the Nelson Touch, which was built on being highly professional in all things, being prepared to do what it takes and aiming to win what ever the odds.

The success of the Club has been due to the commitment of its members and support from a range of local organisations including Lyme Regis Town Council, Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy, The Powerboat Club, West Dorset District Council, Nigel Clarke Publishing, G F Eyre Trust and sponsor Otter Brewery. To meet the high level of interest in sea rowing Lyme Regis Gig Club is continuing to develop having recently built a gig shed and with plans well advanced for a second gig, a training programme for coxswains and the establishment of a youth section in the New Year’.

Shanty singing is very mush part of Lyme Regis Gig Club, which is very lucky to have a crew of honorary musicians under the direction of Ian Thompson and Adrian Pearson. Which meant the Gig Club’s Trafalgar Celebrations ended with a lusty rendition of Spanish Ladies, Lyme Regis Rebel, Hearts of Oak, Rule Britannia and rather appropriately the Drunken Sailor.

June 5th 2006 The Lyme Regis Gig Club the beginning .At the beginning there were six even seven people and a boat intent on rowing there way into the history books. Where is the sixth person ? They laughed and they rowed and even hit other boats but they were not deterred because they new they would always be happy if they sunk. But the future was bright they aimed to raise funds to buy a gig that would be the envy of the gig world with the flag of Lyme Regis flying with pride.Be with us on Sunday June 29th from 12.30 at the Cobb and join in the celebration of the launch of the first Lyme Regis Gig Club Gig . Last week my daughter treated me to lunch and dinner at the Alexander Hotel this being my first day and only day out since leaving hospital. Apart from the special day two points of note will be remembered by us. The first was the BBC one showing of "Meet the Immigrants" on the Monday evening some of which took place at the Alexander Hotel part of which I was in and the other we visited the Lyme Regis Gig "Rebel" nearly completed in its workshop. What a wonderful sight. Having watched Gigs in other places I cannot wait for the day of the launch of "Rebel". I know my daughter is now as enthusiastic as I am having seen the Gig in the making.

Oh the gig she was long and the gig she looked great.
She was ready for rowing 2008,

And that’s how we found ourselves making her oars

And we shall go rowing the Lyme Regis way,
Out of the Cobb and over the bay.

Now Big Chris and Hugh work as fast as they can,
Any problems and Hugh got them out of a jam
And Chris is so clever with blade and with saw
Whenever we turned round, he’d finished an oar!

And we shall go rowing…

“Well just think,
Perhaps we can get them to paint the gig pink!
But if anyone needs to push off rocks or shore,
They can use what they like,
But they can’t use my oar!”

Trish came and joined in, carving curves with the blocks.
And Mike from the Navy – we thought he’d be cox.
While rowing out the Cobb – too close to the wall,
He’d shout “fend her off lads….but don’t use my oar!”

And we shall go rowing…

Mike’s our instructor; a wizard with wood.
He whittled and fettled and helped where he could,
Showed us spoke-shave and planes,
He couldn’t have done more.
We’ve renamed his business “WONDER and OAR”!

Our love for this type of craft started when we visited St Mawes regularly. To see their boats both men and women taking to the water in the gigs is a fine site. A very competitive sport for all ages. These photos taken recently are hopefully the first of the Lyme Regis Gigs and built locally. Being involved from the very beginning we congratulate all those who have worked so hard to get where we are now.

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of Lyme Regis Gig Club will be held at 7.30pm on March 14th 2008 at Lyme Regis Powerboat Club, Monmouth Beach Cap Park, Lyme Regis.

Viewing of the Gig at Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy will be available from 7pm to 7.30pm.

Agenda items to include:

To receive a report from the Chair of the Steering Group of Lyme Regis Gig Club on the preceding year and plans for the future.
To receive a report from the Treasurer of the Steering Group on the accounts of Lyme Regis Gig Club.
To adopt the amended Lyme Regis Gig Club Constitution
To agree the name for the first Lyme Regis Gig
To elect the Committee to include the Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and nine other members.

Following the formal business of the meeting, the Members will have the opportunity to ask the Committee questions about the Gig Club.

The bar at Lyme Regis Powerboat Club will be open following the AGM

NB: Members are invited to stand for the Committee at the Annual General Meeting. However those members wishing to stand specifically for Chair, Treasurer or Secretary should notify the Steering Group (contactable below) in advance of the AGM.

The Lyme Regis Gig Club’s ‘Steering Group’ Chair’s Report and Treasurer’s report on the accounts will be given at the Annual General Meeting.

The amended Lyme Regis Gig Club ‘Constitution’ is sent as an appendix to this document. Members are invited to make comments, within one week of receipt of this correspondence.

At the Annual General Meeting each member will be invited to cast one vote on one of the names short-listed by the Steering Group. Votes will be cast at the beginning of the Annual General Meeting when a brief introduction on each proposed name will be made, the results will be tallied and the winning name announced before the election of the Committee. The Chair of the Steering Group will have the casting vote in the case of a tie.

Please write and cast your vote by nominating just one of the short-listed names if you are a Member of the Gig Club and unable to attend the AGM on March 14th 2008. Postal votes should arrive no later than March 12 2008.

At the Annual General Meeting members of Lyme Regis Gig Club will appoint a Committee of up to twelve people to take responsibility for the running of the Club.

Members are invited to stand for election to the Committee at the Annual General Meeting; however those standing for Chair, Treasurer and Secretary are invited to notify the Steering Group in advance.

The Committee will appoint a ‘Commander’ as ‘President’ for a one-year period to act as honorary head of Lyme Regis Gig Club. The ‘Commander’ is not a Committee Member.

The Committee may appoint advisors in an ‘honorary’ capacity to advise on issues. At the Annual General Meeting it is proposed to appoint an ‘Honorary Health & Safety Adviser’ and Honorary Auditor’.

The Committee will appoint a team of Officers to head-up:

Chair (Head of Operations) Maintenance
Rowing Captain Finance (Treasurer)
Safety Administration
Training Special Projects

An effective Committee team are going to be central to the future success of Lyme Regis Gig Club. A commitment to making the Club a safe, equitable and enjoyable organisation will underpin the working of this team. Members are invited to join the Committee, particularly if they are able to play an active role and serve as an Officer.

The Launch of the Town’s New Gig

The new Lyme Regis Gig will be launched at the Cobb on the afternoon of June 28th 2008.

The event will be a special celebration and the Gig Club would like to organise a sub-group to plan the day. Please contact Marcus Dixon at the address below if you’d like to join this team.

The Boat Building Academy in Lyme Regis are have organised and are now offering Oar Making Courses.

Details as follows:

Tuesday nights, 7 - 9pm, starting on 15th January. The Course runs for eight weeks at a cost of £110.00 per person.

Report of the General Meeting July 5th 2007
Hi everyone trust you are all well. I have listed below the latest news from the Lyme Regis Gig Club General meeting that was held on July 5th 2007 at the Power Boat Club. On behalf of every one I would like to thank them for allowing the Gig Club the use of there club on that evening.

Let me introduce you to the Lyme Regis Gig Club Steering Group who have been working hard to move things forward.

Brief Update .
Seventy people who have expressed an interest in joining the club
We have the provisional OK from the Cornish Pilot Gig Association to establish a club in Lyme
We also have provisional agreement from Lyme Regis Town Council to keep a gig behind building opposite the power boat club.
We have raised £1200 for the club, big thanks to Nigel Clarke for his help in securing a contribution of £1000 from Proctor and Gamble
We have longer term plans to build two pilot gigs for Lyme Regis
We have been out to tender to three boat builders. The Steering Group agreed to commission Lyme Regis Boat Building Academy opposite to undertake the build – subject to contract.
The aim is to commence the build of the first gig in September 07 and for the vessel to be completed by May/June 2008
The Total cost for each gig is in the region of £20,000 to include build, trailer, oars and associated kit.
The Gig Club is submitting grant funding applications to various parties.
There are plans to invite people to become a patron of the Gig Club (£500 for five years) and we are also interested in commercial sponsorship.
We are looking at merchandising
Initially we are looking for all members to pay a one off subscription of £15.00 to be a member.
When we commission the first gig we will invite members to pay an annual fee. Please take a look at the leaflet for details of proposed fees – based on rates paid at other clubs.
Once we have instructed Lyme Regis Academy to start work, we will have to start to think of a name for the Lyme Gig.
This will be interesting and we would like to invite you all to start to think of what she might be called. Please put ideas down on the back of the Gig Club Leaflet.
Fitness sessions up at Woodroffe School for Lyme Regis Gig Club. They have three rowing machines and we can negotiate some sort of club rate.
We are in the process of organising a mini bus trip to Weymouth for opportunity to row a gig, which is likely to be on the afternoon of Saturday August 11th 2007.
I trust this will wet the appetite of all of you who read this report and realise that we mean

business so do come and join us.

Hi everybody,Things are going very well with setting up the club and we are having a general meeting on Thursday 5th July at 7.00pm. This meeting is a chance for us to bring you up to date with finances and the building of your gig.The venue is the Power Boat club in Lyme, so a few beers will have to be consumed. Andrew Goss from Weymouth Gig Club will be there to give us somei nsight into racing and answer any questions we might have.We are now officially a club and so we need to sign people up properly with a membership fee of £15. Please feel free to bring along others who might be interested. I look forward to seeing you there.

June 5th The Lyme Regis Gig Club the beginning .
At the beginning there were six people and a boat intent on rowing there way into the history books. Where is the sixth person ? They laughed and they rowed and even hit other boats but they were not deterred because they new they would always be happy if they sunk. But the future is bright they aim to raise funds to buy a gig that would be the envy of the gig world with the flag of Lyme Regis flying with pride
The new Lyme Regis Gig Club took part in the gruelling Ocean To City searowing race in Cork on Saturday. The inclement weather meant the eventcovered around twelve nautical miles from Crosshaven on Ireland's Atlantic Coast to Cork City Centre.This year over seventy participants took part in Ocean To City, which was staged in rainy, rough conditions backed by a southerly force six. The Lyme Gig Club team comprised Cox, Karen Hull, Andy and Carolyn Llewelyn and Diana and Marcus Dixon rowing Greta, which was built in 1885 and the oldest boat to participate.'The rough conditions at the start of the race suited 'the Lyme team were inthe lead for the first five miles. However despite excellent coxing, the calmer water closer to Cork gave the local boats the edge and 'Greta' with its heavy displacement and 'veteran crew' missed out on crossing the finishing line amongst the leaders. The Ocean to City event is great fun and Cork is a wonderful, friendly city and I hope that Lyme Regis Gig Club will be part of next years event, hopefully fielding the Towns planned, faster Cornish pilot gig' said Marcus Dixon.
